Summary

From the outside, the Delaneys appear to be an enviably contented family。 Even after all these years, former tennis coaches Joy and Stan are still winning tournaments, and now they've sold the family business they have all the time in the world to learn how to 'relax'。 Their four adult children are busy living their own lives, and while it could be argued they never quite achieved their destinies, no-one ever says that out loud。

But now Joy Delaney has disappeared and her children are re-examining their parents' marriage and their family history with fresh, frightened eyes。 Is her disappearance related to their mysterious house guest from last year? Or were things never as rosy as they seemed in the Delaney household?

For me, it felt like the most exciting things in this book all happened in the past when this tennis family with four children was young and vital。 I thought those times sounded interesting, when the dad and mom ran a tennis school that produced outstanding players。 Now we have over-60 parents who aren't happy and four middle-aged kids who no longer are involved with tennis and now have a variety of relationship, money and health issues。 I felt like I was having lunch with people where I was hop For me, it felt like the most exciting things in this book all happened in the past when this tennis family with four children was young and vital。 I thought those times sounded interesting, when the dad and mom ran a tennis school that produced outstanding players。 Now we have over-60 parents who aren't happy and four middle-aged kids who no longer are involved with tennis and now have a variety of relationship, money and health issues。 I felt like I was having lunch with people where I was hoping I could leave the table soon。There is a plot with a strange girl appearing on the parents' doorstep after being beaten by her boyfriend。 Later on the mom disappears。I didn't connect very much with the characters and skipped to the end of the book。 I can imagine that others will enjoy this book more than I did。 It felt like it wasn't my kind of book。 。。。more

This book was ok, but too long。 I mostly enjoyed the characters and story, but got a bit bored, and in the end was left feeling flat。

I really enjoyed this book - very juicy story, as you would expect from Liane Moriarty。 Not quite as good as Big Little Lies, but I would say it's one of her better novels。 I really enjoyed this book - very juicy story, as you would expect from Liane Moriarty。 Not quite as good as Big Little Lies, but I would say it's one of her better novels。 。。。more

Liane Moriarty never fails me。 Her stories are about family, friends, and murder, my favorite combination。 The Delaney's are a family of tall, athletic, competitive, tennis loving, Australians。 They argue, disagree, and seem to always be competing, rather in a tennis match, for their father's affections, or at life。 They are loud。 They are funny, they are a hot mess, and their mom is missing。 Dad may or may not have killed her and who the heck is this homeless, frail, pale, waif of a girl that h Liane Moriarty never fails me。 Her stories are about family, friends, and murder, my favorite combination。 The Delaney's are a family of tall, athletic, competitive, tennis loving, Australians。 They argue, disagree, and seem to always be competing, rather in a tennis match, for their father's affections, or at life。 They are loud。 They are funny, they are a hot mess, and their mom is missing。 Dad may or may not have killed her and who the heck is this homeless, frail, pale, waif of a girl that has come to live with The Delaney's? Okay, I wasn't sure what to expect with this one because while I loved Liane's others works - Nine Perfect Strangers fell a little flat for me。 Disclaimer: I received an arc from the publisher - thanks !!!!I loooved this。 I loved this so much。 I forgot how much I missed Liane Moriarty's works and how badly I need to go back and do some re-reading。 Had this been anyone else's book it may have seemed slow - but due to her writing style I just genuinely get roped in and care about all the character Okay, I wasn't sure what to expect with this one because while I loved Liane's others works - Nine Perfect Strangers fell a little flat for me。 Disclaimer: I received an arc from the publisher - thanks !!!!I loooved this。 I loved this so much。 I forgot how much I missed Liane Moriarty's works and how badly I need to go back and do some re-reading。 Had this been anyone else's book it may have seemed slow - but due to her writing style I just genuinely get roped in and care about all the characters。 Honestly, things I like that she does I'm so annoyed by when other authors do。 She just has this way of making everything so interesting and enjoyable。 She gets me hook line and sinker。The story was a ride。 I had NO IDEA what was going to happen and every time I had an idea I was completely off。 I don't want to write too much for fear of spoilers but I can say with full confidence to give this one a read if you enjoy her other works。 Loved!! 。。。more

Intriguing and exciting to the very end。 Lots of different paths the characters could end up taking and Liane Moriarty did a great job of tying up all loose ends and answering all the reader’s questions by the end。 A fun and easy read that I really enjoyed。 Disclaimer - I received an advanced copy of this book as a part of a giveaway through Goodreads。 I was not required to leave a review nor did it affect my review in any way。

Ahh it doesn't get much better than a family which loves one another dearly - so much in fact, that they just want to murder each other sometimes, and may have done just that。 I must admit, I was not a big fan of Liane Moriarty's previous two books, but this one reminded me of why Moriarty has been one of my go-to authors for years! The Delaney family is the envy of their Australian community - everyone knows them and loves this tennis-obsessed family。 Not only did parents, Stan and Joy, once run a successful school where they coached renowned tennis players, including their four now-adult children; they still successfully compete in doubles tournaments in their golden years。 All appears to be perfect until one night a stranger named Savannah knocks on Stan and Joy’s door, and life changes for them all。 Fast forward less than a year later, and Joy Delaney disappears, and Stan's suspicious behavior places him as suspect numero uno, and even their children have doubts。 Once Joy disappears, everyone speculates what exactly went on in the Delaney household after Savannah entered their lives, and the Delaney children begin evaluating their parents’ marriage and their family history with fresh, suspicious eyes。Interestingly, although the storyline focuses largely on a missing woman and a husband accused, it really isn't the focal point of the book。 It is more about complex family relationships and rivalries, and is part contemporary fiction, part mystery。 I love Moriarty's use of wry humor, even in an intense family drama。 I also found it very clever how past and present day were weaved together in alternating chapters, not only with the main characters, but also with random secondary characters - it added an interesting touch to the back stories。 Although this one doesn't contain the shocking, fantastical moments that some of her other books do, in signature Moriarty fashion, the plot takes numerous twist and turns, and the characters become more relatable with every chapter。 I couldn't put it down, as I needed to find out what happened to Joy。The one thing I will say is that it is a LONG book, and I felt like it could have been a hundred pages shorter without taking anything away from the plot。 I also thought that the sudden jump to COVID-world at the very end of the book felt out of place and forced - it just wasn't necessary。 Overall, though, I found this to be a gripping family drama that deftly explores how parental expectation, even unintended, can become toxic to an entire family。 4 stars。 。。。more

Liane Moriarty has an uncanny ability to write characters that feel so real and relatable。 This story winds so well, weaving in bits and pieces, all while accelerating to a very satisfying finish。 The Delaney family is like any other - they have baggage and misremembered events that tinge the present。 I would highly recommend this book, and deducted one star only because there wasn't a defining element that has me raving (I am hard to win over for a perfect rating)。 Liane Moriarty has an uncanny ability to write characters that feel so real and relatable。 This story winds so well, weaving in bits and pieces, all while accelerating to a very satisfying finish。 The Delaney family is like any other - they have baggage and misremembered events that tinge the present。 I would highly recommend this book, and deducted one star only because there wasn't a defining element that has me raving (I am hard to win over for a perfect rating)。 。。。more

A gripping and complex contemporary mystery。 An indepth story about a family as they overcome unexpected obstacles such as when the mother goes missing。 I loved how to story seemed so random and then came together in the end。 I was surprised multiple times and it was so realistic to actual life。 As mostly a science fiction/fantasy reader this was a very good choice to get me out of my comfort zone。 Easy-to-read and could not put it down。

Apples Never Fall works really well as a family drama- a family where tennis was always the focus even though the kids ultimately go in different directions- and where the familial relationships are all knife edge。 Then Mum disappears and things start looking a bit dark。I'm a huge fan of Liane Moriarty but this one lacked her usual BOOM。 The mystery element was hugely predictable and some of it felt a bit forced。 I really enjoyed the siblings as a group dynamic, in fact their bickering love was Apples Never Fall works really well as a family drama- a family where tennis was always the focus even though the kids ultimately go in different directions- and where the familial relationships are all knife edge。 Then Mum disappears and things start looking a bit dark。I'm a huge fan of Liane Moriarty but this one lacked her usual BOOM。 The mystery element was hugely predictable and some of it felt a bit forced。 I really enjoyed the siblings as a group dynamic, in fact their bickering love was the highlight of this for me。It is good but whereas her previous books have had that edgy feel and that really engaging sense of crazy, Apples Never Fall doesnt have any of that in my opinion。 In fact it's such a straightforward process from A to B to me it felt like another author This probably feels like a negative but it's not so much negative as different。 This is a really good book but I miss the madness。 。。。more

Or has Stan done something to Joy? Solving the mystery will have you keep turning the pages, but falling into this world and these character’s lives will have you gripped。 In each chapter, Moriarity slices another piece of each character’s story that's as juicy as the last。 I also really loved seeing senior characters as the leads! My only critique is the ending could’ve used some tightening。 Once the mystery is solved there are about 40 pages of wrapping things up that could’ve been condensed。 If you love family dramas you neeeeeeed to read this when it comes out this September!! 。。。more

I love Liane Moriarty's books and I was excited to read this one。 This has a little bit of suspense but it is primarily a family drama。 Joy Delaney is missing。 Her husband has scratch marks on his face and there was clearly an argument the night before she went missing。 Her four children aren't sure what to believe and their loyalties are mixed。Flashing between the past (when a stranger named Savannah shows up at the Delaney's doorstep) and the present (when Joy is missing), this book does a DEE I love Liane Moriarty's books and I was excited to read this one。 This has a little bit of suspense but it is primarily a family drama。 Joy Delaney is missing。 Her husband has scratch marks on his face and there was clearly an argument the night before she went missing。 Her four children aren't sure what to believe and their loyalties are mixed。Flashing between the past (when a stranger named Savannah shows up at the Delaney's doorstep) and the present (when Joy is missing), this book does a DEEP dive into the Delaney siblings, Joy and her husband Stan as well as plenty of random neighbors and others who have little-to-no role in this book。 Herein lies the problem: by introducing and giving a chapter to so many different charaters, the reader doesn't get to really get to know and get invested in any of them。 If the book just focused on the Delaney family, it might have been cleaner。 Instead it is choppy and hard to read。 It is also LONG - nearly 500 pages of hearing about tennis and expectations within a family。At the very end of the book, Moriarty decided to bring in COVID, which seemed really out of place。 It seemed like this book had been written in pre-pandemic times, but for some reason, she wanted to add references to the pandemic and behavior to the book。 This was really clunky and awkward to read。 This was easily a book that could have been evergreen and didn't need any references to a global pandemic。Overall, the story was interesting, but it was long with too many characters and a really unnecessary pandemic chapter at the end。 。。。more
